Club Champs 2014 – Call to Arms

Club Champs 2014 – Call to Arms

CALL TO ARMS!

So the Canoeing Ireland Club Champs are nearly here … and now is where the fun part begins – the actual competition! After 8 weekends of Training the Canoeing Ireland Club Champs is due to take place on April 12th & 13th in Kilkenny.

For those that don’t know – The Club Champs has been designed as an Intervarsity style competition with clubs from all over Ireland taking part in 8 different discipline events. Each discipline will contribute towards each Clubs point total to help decide the 2014 Club Champions.

The Competition will run likes this (full timetable at end of page)
  • Saturday morning competitors can take part in either a Wild Water Race (Based in Clashganny) or a Surf Competition (held in Tramore). Saturday afternoon there’ll be a Slalom Race (based in Clashganny) or Polo.
  • Sunday morning will play host to a marathon race and a Boater X race (Both held on the Nore), before Sunday’s Freestyle event & Sprint Race.
  • There is also a Rafting Fun Event.  The event will be run from Johns Bridge in the centre of town and will also be open to the public.  The event will not count towards club champs points.  As such registration for the event will done at the time, if people fancy a spin in the rafts they can just head down to Johns Bridge on the Sunday afternoon.

Club members can compete in as many or as little of these events as they wish.

Who can put a price on such a great opportunity to represent WWKC and get us into the history books? Well … Turns out Canoeing Ireland can, however WWKC have agreed to subsidise fees by a whopping 50%. This means that entry fees for the weekend will be €15 for adults, €10 for college students and €5 for juniors. The price will be the same whether you’re looking to enter one or 4 (which is realistically the most you can manage!).

As the biggest canoeing & kayaking club in Ireland, Wild Water Kayak Club should definitely be aiming to come first in this. But to do this we need as many club members as possible to join in and partake. You don’t have to be super fit (not that many of us are) and you don’t need to be out competing in these disciplines. All that’s really necessary is an interest in helping WWKC come out on top!

There’s no limit to the amount of people we can enter in any of the disciplines – bar polo (only one team is to take part and this is being looked after by the Polo officer). We can have as many participants as we like after that! It’d be great to see as many people as possible attending this and taking part. So if you’ve ever even knocked into a slalom pole down at the club then why not try your hand at the real thing … if you’ve noticed the juniors out in the wildwater boats and thought ‘that looks easy’ – then NOW is your chance to prove it!

Entries close on Monday 7th April 2014 so if you’re interested in taking part, drop me an e-mail at junior@wwkc.net outlining what you’d be interested in taking part in and I’ll get you signed up! Cheers,
Shane
