A group of paddlers from WWKC who are travelling to continental Europe over St.Patricks weekend to take part in a leg of the Deutschland Cup Wildwater Race Series in Monschau on the Rhur River in the Eifel region of Germany.

WWKC will be represented at junior level by Odhran McNally, Craig Cummins, Cian and Darragh Clarke, Eadaoin Whelan, Mollie Claffey and Conor Quinn. Senior paddlers will include Keith McGuirk, Bruno Halter, Conor Healy and Martin McCarthy. They will be accompanied by parents and three or four paddlers from Thomastown Paddlers and Salmon Leap Canoe Club.

For the past several months the paddlers have been training hard for the event in Ireland and will also stop off in an artificial white water course in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region of France to get in some last minute rough water practice.

WWKC members last raced Monschau in 2008, when it snowed heavily during the race, adding poor visibility and biting cold to the challenges faced by the racers – we are hoping for somewhat easier conditions this time around! The race passes through the centre of the medieval town of Monschau making for a spectacular backdrop to the event and this is particularly fitting, given that the event is one of the oldest annual Wildwater races in the world.

Wishing you all the best of luck in the race.
